The story follows the lives of the March sisters as they navigate adulthood without the presence of their father, who fights in the American Civil War. In the plot, writer Jo is working on a novel about her life and that of her sisters: actress Meg, painter Amy and pianist Beth. Although they are very different from each other, each determined to live life on their own terms, they are united by a strong bond of unconditional love, in difficult times.
